Backyard Observatories By SkyShed

Frakattack,

Hello,

Wouldn’t it be nice to have your own observatory right in your backyard? It turns out there is a new craze among astronomers for doing just that! Introducing SkyShed!

It is a shed that is designed so that the roof can be rolled aside leaving you and your telescope unobstructed beneath the stars.

.

I think these are a great idea for anyone who finds themselves using the “it takes too long to setup” routine, as an excuse to get out of spending quality time with the universe. Imagine if you could simply leave everything setup as it is, walk away from it, and then come right back to it the next night. I believe this will encourage much more use of some of the dust ridden telescopes hidden away in people’s garages.

As for me personally, I have always enjoyed the mobility of Telescope Photography. I love nothing more than to setup my telescope in a new location and to spend the cold night with one eye glued to the eye piece. I don’t think the SkyShed is for me, but that’s not because I don’t like the idea. Infact I love the idea, but it just wouldn’t suit my needs. For starters I can’t stand the light pollution around my area. Now I don’t think SkyShed would make this problem worse but it would certainly influence me to stay at home in the shed instead of driving out to the family farm. Secondly the horizon is badly obscured enough by the houses and fences around my home so I dont think I would want to put my telescope inside 4 walls so that I could only point it upwards. I’m possibly exaggerating a wee bit here, but I dont think that 4 walls around a telescope is ideal for me.

But as I mentioned earlier I think this could be a great idea for the right person. If you spend most of your time observing from your backyard then this might be the way to go. You could lock up all your equipment so it can’t be stolen and when you’re ready to view you don’t need to set anything up. Just roll away the roof and away you go.

In conclusion I’d like to say that it might not be right for me but 10 points for a very creative idea! If you’ve got any thoughts on the SkyShed Leave us a comment below.
